Magazines Galore - Part 1

Over the past year I have really enjoyed working with a number of our fantastic Australian editors. I have had the privilege of having many of my quilts feature in prominent Australian magazines and feel trying blessed to be able to have the opportunity to feed my creative side.

Featured in this post is a number of the quilts I can now show you finished. The most difficult thing about working with magazines is all the secret sewing I can't share with everyone so I wanted to make sure I show you all the completed products. So this isn't the biggest post you've ever seen I've decided to break it up into 2 posts. I hope you like what you see.

My first quilt "Cascades" was made for Down Under Quilts using the Linen Cupboard range from our very own Emma Jean Jansen. This quilt utilised triangles (lots and lots) and some complementary geometric quilting by my gorgeous longarmer.

The next quilt "Tribal Dance" featured in Patchwork and Stitching magazines using the Etno fabric range by the lovely Pat Bravo. I love working with Pat's ranges as a long time quilter herself she really does design ranges that work so well together.

Lastly we have "Beginnings" which was part of Handmade's 2015 Yearbook utilising Indelible fabric range by Katarina Roccella for Art Gallery Fabrics. This is a fat quarter friendly quilt and is such a simple but effective design to make a lovely large quilt with no waste. Within this range there is a gorgeous monochrome fabric featuring stags and doilies that makes the perfect backing. I think I need to get myself another bolt.

With all this quilt designing and making and after many enquiries I am now making my patterns available for sale and I've been very humbled by the demand already so thank you. Current patterns are available for download from Crafsty here and hopefully soon you will also see them on sale in some of your favourite quilting shops.

Till next time....happy sewing....

Baby Clothes Memory Quilt - Work in Progress

I have had so many enquiries regarding baby clothes memory quilts that I decided I would bite the bullet and make one and see if this was something I wanted to offer my customers in the future.

Armed with a stack of baby clothes and a 6.5 inch square ruler I began feverously chopping away these cute little squares of clothes. As this is going to be quilted on a longarm I made sure there were no zips or buttons but I did include little pockets as features.

I decided to do a standard style quilt, 6.5 inch squares, 1.5 inch sashing and a 6.5 inch outer border. To help stabilise the various fabrics I also used a lightweight iron on interfacing applied to the back of each square.

These quilts are very time consuming and it take a lot of patience to be careful not to pull at the squares when sewing otherwise it becomes extremely difficult to line up the sashing - I found out the hard way!!

I am really happy with the overall result and am now offering this range to my customers. I had such an overwhelming response to this quilt that within 2 days I had secured 4 orders - wow!! I feel very humbled that I am trusted to take someone's treasured items and turn them into a beautiful quilt. To keep myself sane I decided to only take one order a month and I'm glad I did so I also have time to make some lovely quilts of my own.

I use 100% cotton batting in between and back with a super soft flannel to make them extra cuddly. This one is now off to the quilters and I'm thinking a simple all over stipple would be perfect.

Sunday Stash - Red and White

It's a long weekend here in Australia so I'm making this post short and sweet. I purchased this fabric last month from Craft Depot - a great local quilting shop. It was simply called Redworks. I was looking for something for a Christmas quilt but liked the idea of red and white then the quilt could be used all year round and not packed away once the festive season was over.

I bought 2 of the fat quarter bundles there was 8 fabrics to a bundle and also some yardage for sashing and a border.

I already have a design in mind which I was lucky enough to have accepted by one of the Australia Quilting magazines for their Christmas edition which will be on sale in September.

It's Sunday so I'm linking up with Molli Sparkles Sunday Stash weekly linky party.

"Frolic in the Woods" - A Single Bed Quilt

This is my latest finish, a commissioned single bed quilt for a beautiful 5 year old girl who loves pink, the outdoors and anything with horses.

Fabric is Sarah Jane's Wee Wander range and features children playing and horses and deer's frolicking in the woods. With such intricate detail in the fabric and a request to keep the quilt simple from the customer I decided to frame a large panel and then add an additional border. For more information on the design you can read my previous post here.

I do warn you I'm absolutely in love with this fabric so this is a picture heavy post !!

The completed quilt is shown here on a King Single bed - it is actually single sized at 57.5 inches x 87 inches.

This is the quilt back and utilises another large Wee Wander print "Summer Ride in White". To link the front and back of the quilt I added a 2 1/2 inch strip from the first border and a large strip of the outer border. You could actually display either side as the front as both prints are equally as beautiful.

The quilt was then bound with "Nature Walk in Magenta" and frames the quilt beautifully. I prefer to hand bind my quilts as I like the finish and I'm not as confident with machine stitching.

And of course I couldn't post a finished quilt with out it all rolled up - looks so snuggly.

This beautiful quilt is off to it's new home next week with a matching pillowcase to one very excited little girl.

Till next time.......happy sewing !!
